Training
Despite a lackluster economy, U.S. companies spent more on employee training in 2002 than ever before, according to the American Society for Training & Development's "2003 State of the Industry Report," a survey of more than 275 American organizations.
Training expenditures as a percentage of payrolls increased to 2.2% in 2002, up from 1.9% in 2001, and training expenditures per employee increased almost $100 to $826 from $734 in 2001. A rising training tide might not lift all boats, though; the job function receiving the largest percentage of training expenditure in 2002 was customer service.
